Originally, a quick email i sent out about restaurants:

  • For awesome greek food, Vasilli's. I particularly liked dropping by for lunch, picking up a couple of sandwiches and heading to the beach with them. They are off Mission St near Bay st, next to the Fallaffel place on Mission. Dinner is also good there, especially when the live greek music and belly dancing is going off.
  • For breakfast, I love the Brazil Caf, authentic brazillian breakfasts with an assortment of exotic fruits and beverages to choose from (like avocado shakes). Across from Vasilli's. Apparently it had a fire recently, so it may be closed. Otherwise, you can hit Walnut Caf or Zachary's, both downtown. Each has it's own cult following and there are regular gang wars about which is the better brekky spot.
  • Santa Cruz is all about two things: sushi and burritos. Now, really, the quality of both these items is pretty damn high in SF, so I won't say you'll be impressed, but they are good. For novelty's sake, I'd say Pink Godzilla on 41st Ave (capitola) is worth checking out. Imagine Japan crossed with the Santa Cruz surf scene. It's rad. Surf Sushi. Plus they have some harder to find items like toro and natto and a selection of hawaiian style sushi. For a wide selection of vegetarian sushi, Mobo is the best. Located in the shopping area between the river and downtown.
  • If you want to drop more cash, the Pearl Alley bistro always has a wonderful menu. Downtown, down pearl alley, between walnut and .. something -- the alley only goes one way from walnut st.
  • If you want a kick-ass selection of beer and pub food: 99 bottles. Yes, they have 99 different kinds of beer. Santa Cruz staple. Downtown.
  • If you want a good sandwich, i do enjoy the deli sandwiches made in the New Leaf markets. They're scattered around town. One is downtown.
