On Jeremy's methodology of organization. An organic approach to ontology. Or some other bullshit like that.
Do not pre-optimize. Everything starts with the misc box. Everything goes into the misc box. When the misc box gets too full, attempt a sort on the misc box and move any large sets into their own labelled box. From time to time it may be good to move smaller labelled boxes back into the misc box and try for a new sort. Catastrophe is good, crystallization dangerous, gas useful in small quanitities where the brain can make its own hidden connections.
Hidden connections are the potent glue by which artificial classification systems should work. These connections should probably never be described but exposed in useful ways.
"The behavior of the old Finder desktop is a feature I sorely miss. To move a file you can first drag it from it's parent folder window to the desktop. You are then free to navigate to another folder window and drag the file from the desktop to the new location. The difference between the desktop and any other file/folder container was that it remembered the original location of the files. A put away command (command + Y) would move any item on the desktop back to it's original location as long as it wasn't created on the desktop."
